The Minnesota Wilderness could only muster 20 shots on goal against a strong defensive Wisconsin Windigo squad Saturday night, and fell 3-0 in game 1 of a 2-game weekend series.
The Wilderness (19-11-4) was stymied on six power-play opportunities. Kevin Marx Noren had the team’s best chance, on a one-time shot from the left face-off circle that Windigo (17-13-2) goaltender Gavin Moffat denied with an outstretched right leg that came late in the 3rd period.
Meanwhile, Wisconsin took control of the game early, scoring just 1:12 into the game on a goal by Max Martin. The Windigo stretched the lead to 2-0 when Victor Widlund beat Isak Posch on a short-handed breakaway with 15 seconds left in the opening frame. The Windigo completed the scoring when Frank Jenkins scored a power-play goal 6:56 into the second period.
Wisconsin finished the game 1-for-6 with the man-advantage, and outshot the Wilderness by a 24-20 count.
Posch took the loss making 21 saves. Burfoot was credited with the win making 20 saves for his league-leading 5th shutout of the season.
The two squads will finish the two-game series Saturday at 7:00 p.m. in Eagle River.
