Two late extra attacker goals in the final minutes of Sunday night’s game were not enough for the Minnesota
Wilderness, as they fell to the Anchorage Wolverines, 5-4.
Frantisek Netusil scored twice in the third period in a comeback bid after Anchorage built a 5-2 lead in the early
stages of the frame. Netusil’s first goal came with 3:56 left as Minnesota applied a 6-on-4 attack with a pulled
goaltender and on the power play. Netusil cut the deficit to two goals when he one-timed a feed from Cayden
Neice past Anchorage goaltender Maverick Avent with an additional assist going to Jakeb Lynch.
Lynch and Neice would again combine to assist on Netusil’s second tally. With 21 seconds left Netusil sent one past
Avent on a shot from the high slot. That goal gives the veteran from Prague, Czechia, 10 on the 26-27 season, but it
would be the last of the game for Minnesota, as Anchorage managed to run out the clock and preserve the win.
The trio of Robinson Djian, Valdislav Tspako and Cole Cheeseman combined on the Wilderness’ other two markers.
Djian scored with 3:21 remaining in the first period on a shot through traffic from the right circle with helpers
going to Tsapko and Cheeseman. That tally, Djian’s second of the campaign, evened the score at one, with
Anchorage getting the game’s first goal from Seth Carlson with 10:42 left in the first frame.
The Wolverines regained the lead when Caleb Mahar struck with 1:31 remaining in period 1 and that lead stuck
until the middle of the second period.
The Wilderness tied the contest at two when Cheeseman notched his first of the season. With 9:29 left in the
middle frame, Cheeseman redirected a blast from Tsapko into the back of the net, with Djian also assisting.
Anchorage responded with three consecutive tallies. Oliver Morris lifted them back in front later in the second and
insurance goals were recorded by Loic Nasreddine and Michael Kotora in the final period, with Kotora’s goal
coming on the power play.
Each team posted one power play goal, with Minnesota getting seven chances, and five going to Anchorage. The Wilderness (6-4-0) outshot Anchorage (6-3-1), 31-30. Ryan Gerlich took the loss, making 25 saves. Avent
recorded the win with 27 saves.
The win for Anchorage gives the Wolverines the edge in the weekend series, as they won two of the three
contests. The Wolverines also claimed game 1, 3-1, while the Wilderness were victorious in game 2, 9-5.
Minnesota next returns to the lower 48. The Wilderness will visit the Janesville Jets this weekend for a two-game
series set for Friday and Saturday nights.
