CLOQUET, MN – DECEMBER 30th, 2017 – The Minnesota Wilderness (15-12-3), continued right where they left off before break on the road against the Austin Bruins (14-9-5) last night in a 4-3 shootout win. They are now tied for second place, and only one point out of first place. They look to continue their 4 game win streak and win the season series against the Bruins tonight at the Northwoods Credit Union Arena. Puck Drop is set for 7:05pm. The Minnesota Wilderness came from behind to win in a shootout 4-3 down at Riverside Arena in Austin, MN. The Wilderness gave up a power play goal early in the 1st period when they were trying to kill off a 5-minute major penalty that forward Alex Truscott took 2:54 into the game. They were eventually able to kill off the rest of that power play but gave up a second goal at the 15:59 mark of the 1st and went into the locker room trailing 2-0 after one.
Nick Altmann opened the scoring for the Wilderness at 2:55 of the 2nd period. Altmann made a nice play to get a loose puck on the forecheck and pass the puck to defensemen Jay Powell at the point, Powell shot the puck and Altmann redirected the puck into the net for his 9th goal of the year. With only 32 seconds left in 2nd period, Nate Horn got his 1st goal of the year on the power play with a rebound goal. Nikoali Lyssogor and Ondrej Trejbal had the assists on the power play goal. The 2nd period ended in a 2-2 tie.
The third period saw back and forth action and the Wilderness were able to get their first lead of the game off the stick of defenseman Ondrej Tejbal at the 12:49 mark of the 3rd Period. Ben Ward won the face-off back to the point right on the stick of Brennan Couet, Couet then proceeded to pass the puck to Tejbal where he shot a one-timer on net beating the Austin goalkeeper high above the glove. Just merely 29 seconds later, Austin scored to knot the game at 3. With no one scoring during the rest of regulation, the game went to overtime.
Goalie Ryan Fanti had to make 6 saves in the 3 on 3 overtime period to add to his 45 saves from regulation to push the game to a shootout. In the shootout, forward Gino Lucia scored first to put the Wilderness up 1-0 but just two shooters later, the 3-man shootout was tied at 1. Wilderness Captain, Eric Gotz, scored in the sudden death 4th round of the shootout to win the game.
