This Past Weekend
The Wilderness went on their first true road trip last weekend to Sault St. Marie, MI and it was not a kind one. The Wilderness were swept by the Soo Eagles despite outshooting them both nights.
Friday night started off with the Eagles getting on the board with a goal from John O’Conner in the first period. Aaron Miller would tie the game with a slapshot from the right faceoff dot, with assists going to Brett Heikkila and Jack Weiss in the second period. The Soo would go on to score six unanswered goals before Robb Stautz would score with just under two minutes remaining in the game. His goal would be assisted by Michael Orke and Tyler Hart. The Soo would walk away with the 7-2 win, with Jack Berry (35 saves) picking up the win and Brock Kautz (14 saves) would take the loss and Ryan Anderson (8 saves) relieving him.
Saturday night, the Wilderness would hope to get off to a quick start to slow down the high scoring Eagles, but the exact opposite would happen seeing the Soo jump out to a 4-1 first period lead. Ivan Chukarov scored the first period goal on the powerplay assisted by Jack Forbort. The Wilderness would get that quick start in the second period though, scoring two goals in the first minute of play. Niklas Lehtimaki would score just 26 seconds into the period with assists going to Chukarov and Billy Exell. Then 18 seconds later, Tobias Bjorklund would score with an assist going to Forbort. Ryan Anderson (16 saves) would take the loss while Jack Berry (35 saves) would pick up another win for the Soo Eagles.
The Wilderness only have one game this weekend, which is tonight against in-state rival and first place companion, the Magicians. The Wilderness beat the Magicians 4-1 in their last matchup on October 4th. Tonight’s game is being sponsored by Black Bear Casino Resort while we are also hosting “Minnesota Wilderness Support Education Night” at the rink. The Wilderness look to get back on track before heading on a twelve day trip to Alaska starting next week.
One former Wilderness player made the headlines last week as Johno May (American International College) earned Atlantic Hockey Co-Rookie of the Week, with his performance against the defending national champion, Union College. May scored the first goal just 3:30 into the game to give the Yellowjackets a 1-0 lead. He would later set up a powerplay goal in the third period to start his college career off with a multi-point night. Johno and the Yellowjacks take on the College of Holy Cross this weekend.
