WEEKEND RECAP: 2/9 – 2/10

CLOQUET, MN – February 12th – The Minnesota Wilderness, gained 3 points this weekend when they hosted the Janesville Jets. The Wilderness won Friday’s game in a shootout 2-1 and lost 5-4 in a Shootout Saturday. The Wilderness are now 22-17–4 for a total of 48 points and are in 3rd Place in the NAHL Central Division.

Head Coach Tim Madsen had this to say about the previous weekend, “Our compete level last weekend against Janesville was very high. Earning 7 out of a possible 8 points against them this season proves to our players that when we compete for the entire 60 minutes, we are a top tier team in this league.”

In a goaltender’s duel in Cloquet, the Minnesota Wilderness earned the extra point with a 2-1 shootout win on Friday. After a scoreless 1st period, the Jets were the first ones on the board in the 2nd period as Jack Vincent scored his 2nd goal of the season to give the road side a 1-0 lead. Late in the 3rd period, the Wilderness finally struck through as Eric Gotz netted his 8th goal of the season with less than three minutes remaining. After a scoreless overtime, Luke Dow scored the only shootout goal of the eight combined attempts to give the Wilderness the win. Wilderness goalie Jacob Sibell made 26 saves and stopped all 4 Janesville shooters in the shootout.

The Minnesota Wilderness dropped Saturday’s game in a shootout 5-4. The Wilderness opened the scoring in the game when Issac Moberg made a great individual effort taking the puck the net early in the 1st period. The Jets would respond netting 3 goals of their own before the end of the period. The Jets also scored early halfway through the 2nd period on the power play. The Wilderness were able to amount a comeback though when Colin Baird Scored on the power play with less than five minutes remaining in the 2nd.  The Wilderness pushed in the 3rd period eventually outshooting the Jets 18-6 and were able to get a face-off goal from Ed Lindelow with about 11 minutes to go in the game. With less than 3 minutes to go, forward Ashton Altmann was able to put in a rebound goal tying the game at 4. After a scoreless overtime, the game went into a shootout. Eric Gotz was able to score for the Wilderness but the Jets scored on their next two attempts winning the game.

Star of the Week:

Goaltender Jacob Sibell was names NAHL Central Division Star of the Week. Sibell stoped 40 of 42 shots on the weekend and stopped 5 of 7 shooters in both shootouts. You can read all about Jacob’s weekend here: http://nahl.com/news/story.cfm?id=23201
