Weekend Recap: 9/30

CLOQUET, MN – OCTOBER 2nd, 2017 – The Minnesota Wilderness captured their first victory of the year, spoiling the Austin Bruins home opener with a 4-2 win at Riverside Arena. The first period was back and forth for the two teams but ended at 0-0. The Wilderness out chanced the Bruins 7-5 with both goalies having their fair share of action.

In the second period the Bruins came out and got the first goal of the game by Vladimir Ahlberg on the power play at the the 13:48 mark. The Wilderness responded with their own power play goal by Kosta Likourezos. Likourezos positioned himself in the high slot where we was fed a pass by Blake Bride, and shot low blocker and put it past the Bruins goaltender. Nick Altmann also assisted on the 5 on 3 power play goal at the 10:29 mark of the second. Less than a minute later, 9:48, the Bruins Travis Kothenbeutel scored a short handed goal to put the bruins up 2-1. The Wilderness continued to pressure and finally got the equalizer with 7:15 left in the second. Eric Gotz broke the puck out to Isaac Kobienia and he passed to N. Altmann streaking up the wall, N. Altmann sped past the bruins defender and took the puck hard to net putting it over the goaltenders pad short side, tying the game 2-2.

The Wilderness started the third period on the penalty kill and were able to successfully defend off the Bruins odd man advantage. The Wilderness took the lead at the 12:04 mark of the 3rd period off the stick of Gino Lucia. It all started with a face-off in the Wilderness defensive zone when Likourezos passed the puck to Ben Ward up the middle for a semi breakaway. Ward was denied on the initial shot but Lucia followed up the rebound and put the puck in the net. At the 6:28 mark, Luica scored his second goal of the game on a long wrist shot that beat the goaltender over his glove in the top right corner of the net. Likourezos picked up his second assist on the goal and Nick Anderson picked up his first NAHL point with the secondary assist.

Trevor Micucci was spectacular in net picking up his first win of the season, stopping 35 of 37 shots which included a couple breakaways and odd man rushes.

Head Coach Tim Madsen had this to say about the lone weekend game, “Our staff was proud of the effort on Saturday. If we play fast, two-way hockey like that moving forward, we are going to win a lot of games.”

The Wilderness are back it it October 6th & 7th for their Home Opening Weekend against the Bismarck Bobcats. There were will be a tailgate party both Friday and Saturday in the Parking Lot from 5pm – 7pm. Free hotdogs & hamburgers supplied by B & B market as well as a live band both nights.
